Faith formation

Educators in the broadest sense of the word are committed to the formation of children and young people. Faith formation is about formation in the domain of faith. The faith of children and young people develops in an environment in which parents, family, church, school and other faith educators play a role. This role is fulfilled in varying ways: sometimes faith educators are very intentionally involved in the formation of the faith of children and young people, and sometimes faith education takes place less consciously. Between being an example, showing and guiding, many forms of involvement in the formation of the faith of children and young people can be found.

Choices in transmitting faith

In this process of involvement in the faith formation of children and young people, faith educators make choices. Sometimes there is a transfer of faith aimed at ensuring that children and young people continue on the same track as the religious educators, and sometimes the choice is made to create a setting in which children and young people find their own way with God and faith. Many (unconscious) choices are made in presenting and guiding children and young people in forming their faith.

Research into the formation of faith

The OJKC investigates how this process comes about. How does faith form? How do children and young people become acquainted with the Christian faith? Which factors play a role in the faith formation of children and young people? What role do parents, family and other faith educators play? What role do people in church and school have in the faith formation of children and young people? The OJKC looks for answers to these and other questions, with a view to the practice of faith formation.
